Stroke
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
Stroke is a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide, occurring when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, resulting in rapid loss of neurological function. In Hong Kong, its impact is profound, with approximately 15,000 new cases annually. The Stroke Chapter of the Clinical Neuroscience Consortium (CNC) unites the expertise of HKU Stroke and the Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) Stroke Team to address this urgent health challenge. Our mission is rooted in advancing prevention, accelerating diagnosis, and delivering cutting-edge treatments to improve survival, recovery, and quality of life for patients. By focusing on both acute intervention and long-term rehabilitation, we aim to reduce the burden of stroke on individuals, families, and society.

OUR APPROACH
Our approach embodies HKU Stroke and QMH Stroke team’s commitment to innovation, empowerment and transformative change. The CNC Stroke Chapter redefines stroke care through a patient-centred, holistic and multidisciplinary model that transcends traditional silos. Leveraging the combined strengths of HKU and QMH, our team—comprising neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, rehabilitation specialists, nurses, therapists, and researchers—works seamlessly to optimise every stage of the care pathway. From rapid-response hyperacute interventions to personalised rehabilitation plans, we prioritise precision and innovation. We also emphasise prevention through community education and risk-factor management. By fostering trans-disciplinary collaboration, we ensure that clinical excellence and emerging research directly translate into real-world patient benefits.

INTEGRATING CARE AND RESEARCH
At the heart of the CNC Stroke Chapter is the synergy between clinical practice and scientific discovery. Our clinicians and researchers work side by side, using insights from patient care to shape studies on stroke prevention, diagnosis, treatment and neurorecovery. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in areas such as biomarker discovery, telemedicine, and AI-powered predictive models are rapidly integrated into clinical protocols. Through joint platforms like the HKU-QMH Stroke Registry and participation in global clinical trials, we bridge the gap between bench and bedside. This dynamic feedback loop ensures our patients receive the most advanced, evidence-based care while contributing to Hong Kong’s role as a hub for neuroscience innovation.
