Movement Disorder
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
Movement disorders, in particular Parkinson’s disease, are prevalent in Hong Kong, affecting approximately 1 in 800 individuals. About 1% of people age above 60 may have Parkinson’s disease, and roughly 10% of patients experience symptoms before the age of 40.
Patients typically present with initial weakness or clumsiness in their limbs, which can progress to extensive stiffness and slowness of movement. Some may also experience pain. For those with movement disorders like Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and refractory Tourette syndrome, treatment options include deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. Cases may be referred for MRI guided focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) therapy for conditions such as essential tremor.
With the advent of robotic surgical assistance (ROSA), and plans to acquire intra-operative CT and MRI, we hope to provide our patients with more efficient and effective therapies.

OUR APPROACH
Our Chapter consists of specialist neurosurgeons and neurologists with expertise in movement disorders. We focus on collaborative care to guide patients through their treatment options, including DBS surgery, ensuring they receive comprehensive support tailored to their needs.
By integrating the latest technological advancements and comprehensive evaluation, we strive to deliver optimal treatment outcomes for our patients.
